Description

A vibrant mezze-style board featuring creamy feta baked until soft, drizzled with spicy hot honey, and topped with crispy fried onions for a delightful texture contrast. Perfect for sharing as an appetizer or party starter.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz block feta cheese
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups thinly sliced red onions
  • 1 cup vegetable oil (for frying)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • Fresh parsley for garnish
  • Warm pita bread or crusty baguette, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place feta block in a small oven-safe dish and drizzle with olive oil. Sprinkle with oregano and black pepper. Bake for 15 minutes, until feta is soft and slightly golden.
  2. While feta bakes, prepare crispy onions: In a shallow bowl, whisk flour, salt, and paprika. Place buttermilk in another bowl. Dip onion slices in buttermilk, then dredge in flour mixture, shaking off excess.
  3. Heat vegetable oil in a medium skillet over medium-high heat. Fry onions in batches for 2-3 minutes until golden and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  4. In a small saucepan, warm honey and red pepper flakes over low heat for 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice.
  5. Transfer baked feta to a serving board. Drizzle generously with hot honey, then top with crispy fried onions and fresh parsley. Serve immediately with warm pita or baguette slices.

Notes

You can customize the seasonings to taste. For extra heat, add more red pepper flakes to the honey or sprinkle with chili crisp before serving.
