Description
A delicious and savory appetizer featuring creamy feta, sweet hot honey, and crunchy crispy fried onions, perfect for entertaining.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces block of feta cheese
- 2 tablespoons olive oil, plus extra for frying
- 1 small red onion, thinly sliced
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 2 tablespoons hot honey
- Fresh oregano or thyme for garnish (optional)
- Pita bread, crackers, or crusty bread for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Place the block of feta cheese in a small oven-safe dish or on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Drizzle with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
- Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the feta is slightly softened and warm through.
- While the feta is baking, prepare the crispy fried onions. In a medium bowl, toss the thinly sliced red onion with the flour, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until well coated.
- Heat about 1/2 inch of olive oil in a small skillet over medium-high heat. Once heated (a small piece of onion dropped in should sizzle), carefully add the floured onion slices in a single layer, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry for 3-5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Season with a pinch of salt immediately.
- Once the feta is out of the oven, transfer it to a serving board or plate.
- Drizzle the hot honey generously over the baked feta.
- Sprinkle the crispy fried onions over the top of the hot honey and feta.
- Garnish with fresh oregano or thyme, if desired.
- Serve immediately with pita bread, crackers, or crusty bread for dipping.
Notes
You can customize the seasonings for the crispy onions with different spices like cayenne pepper for extra heat. For a milder flavor, use regular honey instead of hot honey. Ensure the oil for frying is hot enough for crispy onions but not so hot that they burn quickly.
